Franklin is a city of approximately 80,000 people located about 17 miles south of Nashville, Tennessee, and is the county seat of Williamson County. Settled in 1799 the town was named for Benjamin Franklin, one of America’s founding fathers. Franklin was primarily a farming and ranching community until the late 20th century when the industrialization of northern Williamson County and the growth of the Nashville metropolitan area led to rapid growth in Franklin, with the population increasing five-fold in thirty years. Today Franklin has a dynamic business sector led by major companies in the health-care field and is also a suburb of Nashville with many residents commuting to that city.
One reason new homebuyers move to Franklin is its excellent school system. The Williamson County School District is the second most highly rated in the state according to Niche, an online ranking and review site. The town also has more than a dozen parks for the community’s enjoyment. Most have playgrounds, picnic areas, and walking trails, some feature ball fields and courts, skate plazas, dog areas, and fishing ponds, while others are historic sites from the Civil War Battle of Franklin. Two favorite locations for shopping and dining in the city are the CoolSprings Galeria, a regional mall with over 165 stores, and historic Downtown Franklin. Preserved and revitalized the downtown area houses small shops, boutiques, art galleries, and more than two dozen restaurants and eateries. Downtown also hosts annual events such as the Main Street Festival in spring, PumpkinFest in fall, and Dickens of a Christmas in winter.
